Russian painter

Vasily Ivanovich Surikov (1848-1916) was an outstanding Russian artist whose works have become classics of 19th century Russian painting. He specialized in historical paintings, genre scenes from Russian history and everyday life, and portraits. Surikov had a unique talent for conveying detail and atmosphere in his works.

Taking the snowy town

..............................................The artist’s brother Alexander, wanting to distract Vasily Ivanovich from his sorrowful experiences, gave him the idea to paint “The Capture of the Snow Town” - a ritual Maslenitsa game marking the victory of spring over winter.
